Dear Wine Friends,

Welcome to our Burgundy 2010 Subscription Part 3.

These are the wineries - inclusing some newbies!:

Marquis d'Angerville (Volnay)
Domaine Tortochot (Gevrey-Chambertin)
Simon Bize (Savigny-lès-Beaune)
Jérome Chézeaux (Premeaux-Prissey)
Patrick Javillier (Meursault)
Francois Bertheau (Chambolle-Musigny)

As already said in our last newsletter, the quantities are very small in 2010. But the wines that were bottled have a fascinating freshness, precision and are extremely concentrated with fine tannins. They are suitable for very long storage. If you haven't had the chance yet to get some wines from your favourite growers, we strongly recommend to try our other exquisite producers as e.g. Louis Boillot or Dublere, where we still have some wines left for subscription, or see our newbies as e.g. Jérome Chézeaux or Francois Bertheau a further Domaine from Chambolle-Musigny which is very highly rated among Burgundy insiders.

And here are our new offers for subscription:

There's not much to say about the 2010 wines of Marquis d'Angerville. We had the chance to taste them on the Grands Jours in Burgundy end of March and we must admit: They taste divine. But they are so rare and demanded especially with the small amounts of 2010, that we got an extremely small allocation this year and prices went up again. Therefore we will have to strictly limit the order of those wines.

Finally arrived: The new wines for subscription fromDomaine Tortochot

We visited the sympatic Chantal Tortochot in Burgundy, see our report.

In 2010 the complete collection is impressive. It suits especially for fans of young Burgundy wines. The wines are presenting their selves extremely open with expressive, elegant fruit and fine tannins. Impressive how Domaine Tortochot is able to carve out the specific terroir characters (certainly the biologic cultivation is one of the major factors here). Apart from the Gevrey Jeunes Rois with a very favorable price we are now able to offer an exciting Village Champerrier. It comes from very old vines and is very mineral  and complex. From the Grand Crus we liked the most the Mazis-Chambertin, a feminine style but very polished with a bit of low toast wood showing which will no doubt integrate with time and the Chambertin Grand Cru: Dark brooding, with enormous depth but perfectly ripe tannins. One of the best wines we tasted on our entire Burgundy trip! The Tortochot wines will be ready for shipping end of April 2012!

Please welcome nowSimon Bize!

On our trip he first presented himself reserved, quite the contrary to his wines. But after some time we broke the ice and sealed the allocation!

Bize is a master of the so called Vendange Entier (whole cluster fermentation). He uses this method moderately which leads to wines with an impressive and interesting flavor but also with a very delicate style especially with the adequate maturing in the cellar. The tasting started with the absolutely convincing Bourgogne rouge Les Perrieres. We think it’s one of the best Bourgogne on the market today. It's always a great sign, if a domaine pays that attention to its smaller wines. Our highlight was the Savigny Les Fourneaux 2006 which illustrated perfectly the aromatic development and the delicate style of this domaine. For our subscription we were able to snatch a nice collection of 1er Crus. We are sure you will be interested in 1er cru Les Vergelesses which is one of the top wines of Simon Bize. Apart from the 2010s we also got some smaller amounts of 2009s, a great vintage for Bize as he told us. Use the opportunity to get some of the great and highly rated wines as e.g. Les Talmettes, Les Vergelesses and Les Fourneaux. The wines of Patrick Bize will also be available for shipping End of April.

New for our Burgundy White Wine Lovers: Patrick Javillier from Meursault

Patrick Javillier a man with a perfectionist attitude is one of Meursault's best growers and produces some of the most consistent white burgundies. Clive Coates calls Javillier even “the King of Meursault”.

Now you can discover the very precise and elegant white 2010 wines of Patrick Javillier:: Bourgogne blanc Cuvee Oligocene, Les Tillets, Les Clousots, Cuvee Tete de Murger and Corton Charlemagne

The wines of Domaine Javillier will be available for shipping end of April (do you mean September?) but are ready now for Subscription.

Chézeaux:Brand new with unbeatable price performance ratio!
The hint of a customer and the high rating of Antonio Galloni led us the way to this unconspicuous Domaine in Premeaux-Prissey. We were invited to taste the whole collection and were very impressed! We started with an excellent Bourgogne Rouge with the unbelievable price of 10,90 EUR (Galloni: 90P)! We then continued with two brilliant Village wines, and some potentially stunning 1er Crus. Our favourites are: Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots (the vineyards is very close to the valuable Vosne 1er Cru Les Malconsorts) with a gorgeous elegance (36,90€ - Galloni: 91-93P.), the Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains with an exuberant power and concentration and the rough charme of a great Vaucrains (39,90 - Galloni: 93-95P.), and the ultra elegant Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots (54,90€ - Galloni: 94P.). We need to thank Gallioni: He described in his recent report the characters of the Chézeaux wines very accurately.

The Chézeaux wines will be also available for shipping end of April!

Domaine Francois Bertheau: Exemplary Chambolle-Musigny Wines on highest level!

Francois Bertheau, vintner in 5th generation steers the afair of this 6.2 ha domaine in Chambolle-Musigny since 2004. The wines of Bertheau in our opinion are the  quintessence of the wines of Chambolle Musigny: aromaticly and fine with great expressive fruit and moderate tannins, enormous elegant and tänzerisch (?) (very similar to its producer J) but also with high concentration and complexity. A very traditional managed domaine with accurate Kellerarbeit (?) They use no brightening or filtration and a very moderate use of new oak (about 20%).

Already the Chambolle Village we tasted from barrel was so enticing, that disgorging was almost impossible. Then we continued with a considerably more concentrated Chambolle 1er Cru, an assemblage from four 1er Crus, all located beyond the Grand Crus Bonnes Mares. More ripe and more open was the Chambolle 1er Cru Les Charmes, with abundant shape, expressive friut and mellow tannins. The grand final are the two top Crus: 1er Cru Les Amoureuses und Grand Cru Bonnes Mares. Both wines are so stunning that we could not believe what we had in our glasses, that we were that lucky to discover those great wines which were completely new to us. An Amoureuses is never a bargain but Bertheau shows that he’s on top when it comes to the best of those exemplars. The Bonnes Mares has an enormous depth, but on the elegant side. It’s a dark fruited Grand Cru with big length and very present structure and smooth tannins. The character is quite different than the Amoureuses but of course not in quality! By the way: we were very lucky to get some cases of Chambolle Village and Chambolle 1er Cru from 2009 but you need to be quick because this also was a great vintage for Bertheau, the wines are gorgeous!

Bertheau is not very well known outside of France. The main part of his export went to the UK and the US. We think now it’s time that you discover this very unique and fascinating vintner! We are happy to be able to offer the wines of Bertheau exclusively in Germany! The wines will be available for shipping in autumn 2012, but are now ready for subscription.
