Burghound - Tasting note: A fresh and relatively cool red berry liqueur and violet-infused nose introduces rich but beautifully well-detailed medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the energetic, balanced and driving finish. This is a really lovely wine of harmony and grace though note that the underlying structure is quite firm.

Burghound: Producer note: Patrick Bize told me that 2009 was a "near perfect vintage that produced wines that can be summed up in two words: serious and pure. I began picking on the 10th of September and brought in splendid and perfectly clean fruit that averaged between 13 and 13.5% in potential alcohols. At those levels there was of course no chaptalization. Yields were all over the place from a high of 47 hl/ha in some of the villages parcels to down around 30 for the 1ers. I honestly don't know why there was this kind of discrepancy because it has nothing to do with anything that we did in the vineyards. I kept roughly 90% of the stems for most wines and the vinification was easy and straightforward. I believe that the use of stems in a vintage like 2009 was very important as it added needed structure. Even so, the wines are velvety, round and supple. The pHs are also perfectly reasonable at between 3.5 and 3.6 and I very much like the fruit, acid and tannin balance of the '09s. As to the wines, they remind me of the 1979s, which means that they should drink well young but as the '79s have amply demonstrated, they will be able to age very well too." As the scores and comments corroborate, the Bize '09s are simply fantastic wines and this includes his brilliant Bourgogne. Don't miss them!
